Rakehell´s Revels

A compilation of vintage jazz from the club night; beautiful music from a bygone era of cinematic splendour to dance to, flirt to, and go wild to. Rakehell´s Revels was one of the hippest nights in town, located at the Café Royal in Regent Street, and attracted an eclectic mix of models, starlets and London´s coolest.

CHARLIE SIEM (www.charliesiem.com)

Sonatas For Violin & Piano

Charlie Siem's dual heritage of a Norwegian father and English mother brings a personal resonance to his debut recording of works by Elgar and Grieg on Challenge Classics which was released on 27th May 2008.

Elgar's Violin Sonata in E major, written towards the end of the First World War and premiered in 1919 in London, is a powerful and contemplative work. The earlier work, Grieg's Violin Sonato No 3, completed in 1887, is arguably the best-known of the three violin sonatas and draws on folk melodies and rhythms. Grieg commented in 1900 that his violin sonatas represented periods in his development "the first naïve, rich in ideas: the second is nationalistic and the third has a wider horizon." Elgar's unashamedly romantic sonata is at the same time powerful and contemplative, nostalgic yet looking ahead.

Also included on the disc are two miniatures by Elgar 'Serenade' and 'Adieu', plus two pieces from Grieg's Hjertets Melodier' (Melodies of the heart) Op 5: 'Two Brown Eyes' and 'You Cannot Grasp The Waves' Eternal Course' in Charlie's own arrangements for violin and piano. Charlie is joined on the disc by the young Russian pianist Andrei Korobeinikov, who caused something of a sensation at the 2007 Tchaikovsky Competition - winning the MICEX Prize for the best performance of a Tschaikovsky concerto.
